Calcium hypochlorite is an inorganic chemical - it is a calcium salt of hypochlorous acid. This substance is in the form of a solid with a white color and a characteristic smell of chlorine, it is hygroscopic. It is obtained in the process of saturating the aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (lime water) with chlorine gas.
2Ca (OH) 2 + 2 Cl2 → Ca (OCl) 2 + CaCl2 + 2H2O
Chlorinated lime is a mixture of hypochlorite and calcium chloride. It is a strong oxidant. In the dry state (after mixing, for example with ethanediol, it ignites), alkaline, acidic and neutral solutions give off chlorine gas.
Chlorinated lime is used for the preparation of disinfection solutions (including pool water) used for decontamination of baskets, garbage containers, chutes, bleaching (also in the paper and textile industry), as an analytical reagent and in various organic and inorganic syntheses. The measure of its activity is the content of active chlorine (one-atom chlorine). A 0.2-0.3% solution is used for disinfection and bleaching.
